Tamblingan Lake is a lake located on the northern slope of Mount Lesung, Munduk Village area, Banjar District, Buleleng Regency, Bali. This lake is one of three twin lakes formed in a large caldera. To the east respectively there are Lake Buyan and Lake Bratan. Flanked by surrounding forests and because of its location in the highlands, this lake has a cool climate.
As a natural tourist attraction, Lake Tamblingan has not been developed towards modern tourism in order to preserve nature and the environment. The main attraction of this place is not only its natural charm, but also the many temples which store the history and development of Balinese civilization and culture, especially regarding the formation and development of Tamblingan Village.
It is said that in the 10th to 14th centuries, the Tamblingan Lake area was a settlement whose center was on Mount Lesung to the south of the lake. For some reason, the residents then moved to four different areas which were still close to the lake area. These four villages were then called Catur Desa, which means four villages, namely: Munduk, Gobleg, Gesing and Umejero Villages. These four villages have spiritual ties and have the responsibility and obligation to maintain the sanctity of the lake and surrounding temples.
The name Tamblingan comes from two words in Balinese, namely Tamba which means medicine, and Elingang which means memory or spiritual ability. As told in the Lontar Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul, it is said that the people in the area were being hit by a disease outbreak. As a way out, someone who has been purified then goes down to the small lake below the village to get water for medicine. Thanks to his prayers and spiritual abilities, the water was then used as medicine and was able to heal the village community. As time went by, the words Tamba and Elingang became Tamblingan.
